SOUTHBANK CENTRE

The Hayward

'One of London’s most important spaces for displaying contemporary art, The Hayward is housed in an austere 1968 building that is both equally loved and derided by the majority of Londoners. Whichever camp you fall into, you’ll agree that it makes an excellent hanging space for the blockbuster exhibitions it puts on.’ (Lonely Planet)

The Hayward was opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1968. It is an outstanding example of sixties brutalist architecture and is one of the few remaining buildings of this style. It was designed by a group of young architects, including Dennis Crompton, Warren Chalk and Ron Herron. The Hayward is named after the late Sir Isaac Hayward, the former leader of the London County Council.

Waterloo Sunset Pavilion

Conceived as a ‘drop in centre for children and old people and a space for viewing cartoons’, Dan Graham’s Waterloo Sunset at the Hayward Gallery 2002–03 is a space for social interaction, learning and fun that is open during and in between exhibitions.

The space houses six touch-sensitive monitors showing cartoons selected by Dan Graham, artist’s videos from the Arts Council Collection and new media commissions.

Open 10am - 6pm daily, all year round.

Waterloo Sunset Pavilion is one of several event spaces available for hire.

The Hayward Projects Space

Designed to accommodate a regularly changing programme of single installations and small exhibitions of works by emerging artists, The Hayward Projects Space is free to the public and open all year round. The Space is adjacent to the Waterloo Sunset Pavilion.

Open 10am - 4pm Sunday - Thursday, 10am - 10pm Friday and Saturday.

The Neon Tower

The Neon Tower on the top of The Hayward lift shaft is a familiar London landmark. Designed by Philip Vaughan and Roger Dainton, it was commissioned by the Arts Council in 1970, and a model was originally shown as part of The Hayward's Kinetics exhibition that year. The yellow, magenta, red, green and blue neon strips which make up the tower are activated by changes in the strength and direction of the wind. The tower is currently being refurbished.
